Pointing in Yorkshire 2017
Zetland at Witton Castle on Monday 1st May

By Will Milburn & Caroline Smith

Bank Holiday Monday will see crowds visit Witton Castle, for the Zetland Point-to-Point. The first race on Monday 1st May begins at 2pm, with the Hunt Race. There are only four entries and with one of these been a non thoroughbred it leaves it down to three, Mistissio  is a moody character and ran better last time when a staying on third but he is not one to rely on, Lovcen has put in a couple of good efforts this season but the one that should win despite a 7lb penalty is Ballyvessey and Alice Dawson, the pair won two starts back, however found conditions too quick recently and any rain would help. Selection - Ballyvesey

The second race is the Intermediate and with 11 entries the Coward team could have the choice between two, either Path To Freedom or The Mobile Man, the latter's recent form with Sposalizio has been let down recently as he could only finish fourth in the Mens Open at Easingwold, whilst Path To Freedom is progressive and was the winner of the Confined at Charm Park last time, he receives a 5lb penalty for that win but it may not be enough to stop him. One who has close form with Path To Freedom is Martha's Benefit, she was a very easy winner at Charm Park but prior to that she was only a length behind Path To Freedom at Sheriff Hutton and now has a 5lb advantage in the weights. Andrew Nicholls could also saddle Bedford Forrest, he hasn't shown anything since his two wins last year and will need a revival, whilst Fairy Mix is slowly returning to form and did so with a good fourth last time so could figure here. Takethepunishment could be the danger to them all though, he is a winner on his two completed runs and was an easy winner at Tranwell recently.
Selection - Takethepunishment

The Restricted has a large field of 16 and the two who are close on form are Monsun Storm and Not Far Wrong, the pair are closely matched on their Bedale form where Monsun Storm came out on top, however he looks like he could take his engagement at the Pendle which looks to be a much weaker event. Barton Jubilee ran better last time to be fourth at Charm Park, Fernando's Song had good form in Ireland but hasn't confirmed yet how much ability he retains, whilst Great Anticipation has done nothing but improve with each run and was a good winner over 2m 4f last time. Pegasus Walk was a good winner at this course last time, whilst Taylormade Boy was third in the Restricted at the same meeting and can both have claims. Selection - Not Far Wrong

The Mens Open again could see the Coward's hold a strong hand with the choice of The Highlander and Path To Freedom, the former will require plenty of rain for him to take part, whilst Wizadora could also be thrown into the mix after an easy course victory last time. Things Change has been consistent for Will Easterby but has struggled to get his head in front, Rosie Du Berlais recently won at Easingwold where she had Sposalizio behind her, however that form wouldn't be strong enough to take this, however Klepht bounced back from a disappointing run at Charm Park to win easily at Tranwell where the second has won since. Selection - Klepht

The Ladies Open looks a different kettle of fish as there doesn't look to be any clear stand out performer, A Country Mile put in a very disappointing effort last time and it may be worth treating him with caution, Harris was a dual winner earlier in the year before putting in an un characteristic fall at Charm Park, Oaklands Bobby isn't as good as he was but firm ground and forcing tactics would see him in good stead, along with Hand Act Or Part who has done well since switched to Ladies races and could do well under Emma Todd. To Begin was a convincing course winner last time however and both rider and horse will no doubt be getting better all the time and could secure another victory.Selection - To Begin

The final race is the Open Maiden and the fast ground may not have been to About Times' liking at Charm park where he pulled up, with some ease in the ground he could bounce back, Clashganny looks to stay extra well and was third here last time in a race that wasn't run to suit, whilst Colrockin looked a very hard ride on his point debut last time and despite all his antics ran well to finish fifth. Free Scorpion was a good fourth here last time, he would probably want dry ground and an easy test, whilst the Nicky Tinkler pair Indian Hawk and Silvers West been notable runners with Indian Hawk likely to be benefiting from his recent second at Charm Park. High Hopper boasts some excellent form under rules but jumped badly and was disappointing on his point debut, but it could be the other Dawson runner - The Dapper Prince who takes the race, he looks a promising son of Dapper and should only improve. Selection - The Dapper Prince
