South Durham at Sedgefield Racecourse on Sunday 28th May

By Will Milburn & Caroline Smith
The South Durham Point-to-Point takes place at Sedgefield Racecourse on Sunday 28th May. This is a new venue for 2017, the meeting was held at John Wade's Howe Hills since 1990. A total of 67 entries have been received. Gates open at 1pm with the first race is at 3pm with the Open Maiden Race.

The opening race is a maiden run over 2m 4f, however it has only attracted four entries and with three of them having only one run between them the verdict could go to Free Scorpion who is by far the most experienced, she looks as though this short trip will suit and the others will have to be something special to win, the only concern would be her apparent reluctance to pass the winner when second at Witton Castle. Jimmy High showed little on his only start a couple of weeks back, whilst the Worcestershire based Snoopie who is a 4yo by September Storm who was bought for 17000 last June and is brother to three time chase winner Remember Forever. Like Free Scorpion Budle Bay is also by Scorpion and is related to winners so may be worth noting. Selection - Free Scorpion

The second race is the Hunt Members race and has three entries and this looks like a schooling session for Colorado Kid, his open form puts him well above these, Indalo Return hasn't shown much for a long time, whilst where's Wilma was a creditable third at Hexham recently and can progress further.Selection - Colorado Kid

Both Open races look very competitive and the first of two is the Men's Open, no doubt Jack Andrews will be keen to seal his lead in the Novice riders title and Strongpoint could certainly contribute towards that, he's suited by sharp conditions and if at his peak would go close, he could also have the choice of Billing, Frontier Spirit and Seeyouincourt, with the latter getting the better of Yoohoof last time at Easingwold. Southern raiders here could include Brody Bleu, he has won once this season and put up numerous creditable efforts and would be bang in the firing line if taking part. Rumble Of Thunder has been in great form this season when competing in Ladies Opens, he is seen to best effect on a sound surface and sharp track and may be most effective in the Ladies where he also holds an entry. Six A Side has running well all year and was unlucky to almost get brought down at Hexham and unseat his rider when favourite, Sposalizio was the one who uncharacteristically fell in front him that day and is another with strong claims. Forge Valley has been in good form but is at his best over stiffer trips and at this level may find one too good, whilst Carlos Gardel has won a couple of very weak races recently. Mickey Miller is on the upgrade after a nice third in the Heart Of All England, whilst Rosie Du Berlais continued in good heart when winning at Hexham recently. Selection - Brody Bleu

The Ladies Open doesn't have as many entries but looks equally as good, Rumble Of Thunder has looked to have a serious engine in these races and is likely to go very well again, whilst Oaklands Bobby although advancing in age still has some spark about him and this track bares some similarities to Mordon a track he was hugely successful at. Harris has been in excellent form this year but his last couple of efforts have made him look vulnerable, whilst another southern raider could be Oh Toodles, he has been in great form this year and despite some of his victories have been in modest contests, his recent game win in a Ladies Open would give him strong claims however could have competition for the lead from Oaklands Bobby. Qoubilai is another who likes to force the pace and Viacometti will have to leave a disappointing run in the Heart of all England behind him to get involved here.Selection - Rumble Of Thunder

The Restricted race holds ten entrants and recent second Danny Mags bounced back to form at Hexham, Firmount Gent travelled smoothly to be third at Witton Castle and will no doubt go close here Norton Grove has been running well for Joe O'Shea and his recent third could be the best form on offer, whilst Easingwold maiden winner Monarch's Glory's participation could all hinge on how he does in Wednesday's sale at Doncaster where he holds an entry. Annys Land won a weak maiden at Witton Castle but was far from disgraced on her next run when fourth and Artisan Man is going from strength to strength, he could easily progress further and make the frame. Selection - Firmount Gent

The Confined race is the penultimate race of the Yorkshire season and it could go the way of a number of runners, The Mobile Man was a well held second at Hexham recently and rider Jack Andrews could also have the services of Seeyouincourt. One person who will be very keen to take on Jack Andrews is Jack Jordan who lies a close second to him in the Novice title, he could have Fureys Bar and a new partner aboard could spark some interest in this reluctant performer. Jack Jordan could also have the option of Mickey Miller, this looks weaker than the Open and only has a 3lb penalty, his recent third in the Heart Of All England would give him every chance. Qoubilai would be another with strong chances but finished behind Mickey Miller at Easingwold, whilst Rosie Du Berlais is in excellent form at the moment and mares in form can sometimes be worth following. Selection - Mickey Miller

The final race is the Open Maiden over 3 miles, Jo O'Shea could saddle Fair Exchange, despite having improved form he still looks moderate and may find one to good. Fayre Enough has been in great form all season and deserves to get his head in front, whilst Cotswold raider Ask Connie was third on debut and this 5yo could be the more progressive of these.Selection - Ask Connie
