Pendle Forest & Craven at Heslaker
5th May

By Will Milburn

The Pendle Forest & Craven Point-to-Point takes place at Heslaker Farm, near Skipton on Saturday 5th May. 62 entries have been received for the meeting. Once again the Pendle Forest are holding a Charity flat race over 1 mile.5 miles run in aid of The Principle Children's Charity, which begins at 1pm. All riders participating in the two races must have raised 250 minimum in sponsorship. The Trust provides free respite breaks to disadvantaged & underprivileged local children, their families & carers from North & West Yorkshire. The main action begins at 2pm, with the Conditions Race for 8 year olds and up run over 2 mile 4 furlongs. Public admission is 10 per adult, under 16s are free. There will be a licensed bar and refreshments. The meeting is 1 mile south west of Skipton, signposted from the A59. Postcode is BD23 3AB.

The opening race is a Club race run over the shorter trip of 2 miles and 4 furlongs, the ones that will benefit from this shorter trip include Fisher, he was a good second behind Sposalizio at Witton Castle and was a formerly useful hurdler when with John Quinn and previous to that was with Gordon Elliott where he was third in a grade 2 hurdle. Royal Benefit won a shorter race like this at the Holderness albeit the main contenders underperformed there, The Sweetner will appreciate this trip if good enough as he is still yet to win a restricted, whilst the Chatfield Roberts pair in She's Real and Love Manhattan both won last time out and set a fair standard. Grouse Lodge was outclassed last time in a Southwell hunter chase, Fever Pitch can be forgiven a below par run last time however after his win at the Holderness it's not guaranteed this shorter trip will be to his advantage as well as having a 5lb penalty, Bravehearted Harry would also have claims.
Selection - Fisher

The Mixed Open is second on the card and it is run over 3 miles and 5 furlongs, so with this been a stiff track anyway, stamina is essential. One Conemara is burdened with a 12lb penalty which makes life hard but is possibly the best suited for this with three wins this season, including over this trip at Corbridge. Prince Of Pirates split two very decent performers at the Bedale but is yet to win in this sphere and can go close again, Kings Lodge is a stout stayer along with Forge Valley. Garde Ville won this race last year and is in fine form this season, but like One Conemara is burdened with a hefty penalty, whilst one with a lively chance could be Shannon Silver, he appreciates a test of stamina and bounced back to form with blinkers last time with a subsequent winner in behind, if building on that could go well at long odds.
Selection - One Conemara

The Open Maiden looks to be between the two Hexham contenders, Miss Carney and Aumit Hill were separated by only a couple of lengths, Aumit Hill was well behind Miss Carney at Charm Park and the pair both look on an upward curve. Rock Me Zippo is a 10 year old maiden and ran a great race to be third at the Bedale meeting, the second has run another solid race since, whilst Sweetsingingriver was travelling well when unseating four out in the same race as Rock Me Zippo there is little to go on with the remainder, however High Hopper has been on a downward curve for a while now but if recapturing his national hunt form could go very well.
Selection - Aumit Hill

The Restricted has only five possible contenders, Monsun Storm has looked a touch regressive this season and was beaten in what should of been a straightforward race at Witton Castle, John Dawson may also have the choice of Snow Castle, he ran to a high mark under rules and was a good second to the useful looking Matts Commission. Whatsinaname looks to stay well and won a large field maiden last time, whilst Rock Home Late won at the first attempt this season last weekend and can progress further.
Selection - Snow Castle

The Hunt Members race looks like it could go the way of one of the Gemma Walton trained entries in Clues And Arrows and Forge Valley, the latter won this race last year where he beat My Old Piano and is likely to record the same result again, whilst Clues And Arrows has been running well in Open company and would also be hard to beat if taking part.
Selection - Forge Valley

The final race is the Novice and Veteran riders race, Alta Rock has been running well this season, along with Hand Act Or Part who will appreciate this stiff track, Honkytonktennessee was a five time winner when with Dan Skelton, he has failed to land a blow this season and now joins Lucy Horner, Iron Chancellor could be the best of these and has stamina to burn, but he looks at his best on very soft ground and may be vulnerable if conditions dry out. Shannon Silver may opt for this race as it looks easier and should be well suited by the track and likely ground, providing the blinkers have the same effect as last time.
Selection - Shannon Silver
