Pointing in Yorkshire 2017
Bedale Point-to-Point

Saturday 13th April

By Will Milburn

The Bedale point-to-point takes place at Hornby Castle on Saturday 13th April. The first race takes place at 1.30pm and has attracted 70 entries. Public admission is 12.50 per adult, children aged 16 and under are free. There will be a licensed bar and refreshments, and a giant screen showing all the races live. The Bedale Point to Point will once again offer generous prize money of 1000 for both Open Races on 13th April - The Mens' Open Race is kindly sponspored by George F White and the Croptech sponsored Ladies' Open Race will be disputed over the shorter distance of two miles and six furlongs. Both contests carry a total prize fund of 1000, with 700 to the winner.

The opening race is the Hunt Members race and looks a penalty kick for Royal Chant who was last seen finishing third in a red hot Intermediate at Sheriff Hutton and may have to tackle Shantou Prince again but beat him at Charm Park and will likely be able to do the same again. Clarks Castle and See Mores Finale look to fill the places whilst Hoping Hes Keen looks to hold very little chance for win credentials and is likely to be well outclassed here.
Selection - Royal Chant

The second race is an exciting contest, it's a race for horses who not won under rules so invites mostly progessive point to pointers, Absainte will have her metal tested here as she has produced some devastating speed performances so far, however this track's emphasis is on stamina and may have to employ some more patient tactics. Ballinahow Bill is knocking on the door this season, clashing with numerous top class performers and again can make the frame, whilst Buck Dancing was the impressive winner of a very competitive Intermediate at Sheriff Hutton, he is 0-19 under rules but has won all three of his starts in points and looks as if he can go further in this sphere. The staying contingent include Rattle The Cage who was last seen finishing fourth in the Grimthorpe Gold Cup, he is a strong stayer and can go well if that race hasn't left its mark. Snow Castle was undone by a late blunder at Charm Park and finished well like a longer track will suit, Wizadora likes to force the pace, whilst Shepherds Cave looks to stay well but will need to take a good step forward if he is to take this.
Selection - Buck Dancing

The Restricted is a weak contest and the one that could bounce back is Alright Marlene, she ran a very encouraging race at Corbridge but has failed massively on two starts since, a revival is required but the ability looks to be there. Buzzkillbob was just touched off by Costly Dream at Friars Haugh, Monsun Storm is the most consistent performer and has the beating of Miss Carney after their runs at Sheriff Hutton last time, whilst Princess Scorpion won at a similarly demanding track at the Holderness last time but has not been seen since. High Hopper was well behind Miss Carney when the pair met last season at the Pendle and Sam Says bolted up on his only completion last season and looks unreliable on form.
Selection - Monsun Storm

The Ladies Open is the feature event on the card been run over 2m 6f and has a prize fun of 1000 like the Men's. Recent Tranwell winner Abbeyview has been in great form this season and can likely run well again but may lack a touch of class, like Meldrum Lad who has looked a cut above his opposition this season and this shorter trip should help him further. Ballinahow Bill has finished behind some useful recruits this season but has yet to regain his impressive form from last season, where as Buck Dancing is progressing greatly at the age of 10 in points but both could have easier options. Knocklong is another who is yet to recapture last seasons form, however Wizadora gets a massive weight allowance in ladies races especially with her novice rider aboard and is allowed to race off just over 10 stone. Martha's Benefit will benefit from this return effort, Dark Mahler is a dual open winner this season and doesn't look short of pace after both victories came at Askham Bryan, but it could be that Foxrock brings his class to the table after a fine second in the Grimthorpe Gold Cup after a lengthy break, he will surely improve for that and could be a formidable opponent with his novice rider claiming weight, it will likely be between him and Meldrum Lad and could be a case of speed versus stamina. Selection - Foxrock

In the Mens Open Guy Brewer looks to hold the aces with his strong team of open horses this season, Ravished also holds an entry at Hexham on Monday and could take that engagement allowing Brewer's other contender the veteran Young Hurricane, a former Stratford Champion Hunter Chase winner he made a pleasing return in the Grimthorpe Gold Cup last time and with conditions likely to be in his favour could be the one to beat. Distime has previously run well over the Aintree fences and has been in good form this season but is 13 now so could be vulnerable to younger opposition such as Path To Freedom who looks full of talent but has shown the odd quirk on occasions but could be the class horse in the race after rallying last time to beat Things Change at Sheriff Hutton who could re-appose, but Will Easterby's Monsieur Jourdain returned to form last time with an impressive display in a lesser contest and can make his presence felt.
Selection - Young Hurricane

The final race is the Open Maiden race and recent Corbridge third Just Dont Know is expected to go close after hanging badly on the home turn and did well to finish as close as he did, Goody Hallett made a pleasing return at Sheriff Hutton, but looks held by Scarlett Peak who was seven lengths ahead of him that day and he could be the one to beat. Kimberley Boy is another who finished runner up at Sheriff Hutton, he is more lightly raced than the others and should be open to more progress. As for the Pete Fahey contingent several of these have shown their hand but Sir Apollo looks open to further progress and the 4 year old by Sulamani - Scaramoosh is brother to winning hurdler Jack By The Hedge.
Selection - Kimberley Boy

The Bon Coeur Hornby Challenge Ride ends the day and offers an unique opportunity for non qualified riders to experience the thrill of tackling the Hornby Castle fences and has quickly become a popular attraction at the Bedale Hunt Point to Point. The postcode for Satellite Navigation is DL8 1NQ.
